.hu domain auction system
The .hu domain deletion process is changing from 18th November 2026. The previous backorder/catch-drop system will be replaced by an auctioning solution. After a domain name gets deleted, it will go onto a list for auctions for 15 days.
During this 15 days, any number of applicants can apply for the domain name. No details (e.g. names, numbers, bids) of the applicant is public.
You can send your registration request through us to apply for any domain name listed for auction. Once submitted, the registration request cannot be revoked, the registration fee will need to be paid, independent of the result of the auction.
After the request has been recorded, the domain applicant will receive a unique link from NIC to make a bid on the domain name. Here the customer may decide to make a bid on the domain. A bid is minimum 6000 HUF and can be increased by any amount. During the auction, the bid can be modified or revoked freely (but the registration request cannot be revoked anymore).
In case the bid is above 100000 HUF, a 10% deposit will be needed that can be paid by card to NIC.
To be able to better prepare for the registration of the domain, the auction list will also include the information if a statement of good faith was ever needed for the domain in the past. This way the applicant can prepare with the digital signature that is needed for the domain registration.
After the 15 days have passed, the auction is closed. Based on the bids, the following happens:
- if there was no request recorded for the domain name, the domain name gets deleted and will be available for re-registration
- if there was only one applicant for the domain name, that applicant will get the oportunity to register the domain name, only the registration fee will be charged
- if there were multiple applicants for the domain name, but noone made a bid, the auction will restart for another 15 days
- if there were multiple applicants for the domain name, and at least one bid was made, the applicant with the highest bid will get the oportunity to register the domain name
- if there were multiple applicants for the domain name, and multiple bids of the same highest amount were recorded, the earliest applicant with the highest bid will get the oportunity to register the domain name
The standard registration fee needs to be paid for all requests, that cannot be refunded.
In case there is only one bidder, the deposit amount is fully refunded.
In case you revoke your bid but your bid was above the 100000 HUF threshold, the minimum bid amount won't be returned.
In case you lose the auction and haven't revoked your bid, the deposit amount is fully refunded.
In case you win the auction, but cannot complete the registration, 90% of the bid is refunded, the deposit won't be refunded.
In case you don't pay your winning bid, the deposit won't be refunded and you will be banned for 1 year from the auction system.
